Donny Does His Sister Proud on “Dancing”

Donny Osmond and Kym Johnson kicked it up Broadway style on Monday’s Dancing With the Stars, earning their first perfect 30 of the season. Brother Osmond did what Sister Osmond failed to do- take the coveted mirrorball trophy on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars.
In a semi-upset, Donny Osmond and partner Kym Johnson were crowned season nine champions during Tuesday night’s two-hour finale, leaving Mya and Dmitry Chaplin in the runner-up slot. Mya had wowed the judges all season with her technical achievements, and ended up with the season’s highest per-dance average. Osmond, however, had no rivals in the showman department, thanks in part to his 46-year career in the business, and came out swinging with every dance. Back in 2007’s season five, Osmond’s sister Marie finished in third place (cementing her place in DWTS history by famously fainting during the judges’ critique), and she has been in the crowd cheering her brother on ever since season nine commenced.

Mya and partner Dmitry Chaplin soared through all of season nine’s Dancing With the Stars, and many favored them to win season nine’s competition. But, in the end, like last season’s favored-to-win contestant Gilles Marini, Mya finished in the runner-up slot. (picture courtesy of ABC-TV/Adam Larkey)
Osmond, Mya and Kelly Osbourne each danced one last dance, after which the judges ranked them and awarded set points of 30, 28 and 26 (just as they did for Monday evening’s dance megamix). Osmond and Johnson reprised their acclaimed Argentine Tango, taking first place over Mya and Chaplin, whose Jive was not enough to overcome the Osmond juggernaut. Osbourne’s Viennese Waltz was lovely, just not enough to compete with her two opponents; with 26 points, she finished the competition with an overall 102 out of a possible 120, landing in third place.
With Tuesday’s scores added to Monday’s, Osmond and Mya tied with 115 points, leaving the tiebreaker up to viewer votes. And apparently, Team Osmond came out in full force; hosts Tom Bergeron and Samantha Harris made no mention of it being a tight contest (as they did last year, when Shawn Johnson beat Gilles Marini by the slimmest margin in the show’s history).

Louis van Amstel and Kelly Osbourne finished a respectable third in Dancing With the Stars’season nine’s competition, defying expectations and the odds. Osbourne emerged as a fan favorite and tugged at viewers’ (and judges’, especially Carrie Ann Inaba’s) heartstrings, leaving her wild child days behind. (picture courtesy of ABC-TV/Adam Larkey)
Seven turned out to be the charm for Johnson, as she won her first championship in seven consecutive seasons of competition. The closest Johnson previously had come to the mirrorball trophy came via with two runner-up placements: season three (partnered with ‘N Sync member Joey Fatone) and season six (partnered with former NFL defensive tackle Warren Sapp). And by winning the big trophy, Osmond stands as the oldest contestant to win in the series’ nine-season history.
Aside from revealing this season’s champions, the finale included dances from the competition’s other 13 contestants; dance-offs between NFL greats Michael Irvin and Jerry Rice, and UFC champ Chuck Liddell and martial artist Mark Dacascos; a Mambo marathon featuring Crazy Cloris Leachman, Jerry Springer and Steve Wozniak; and two performances from Whitney Houston.
Faithful viewers must now prepare for some DWTS withdrawal, as the series takes its hiatus until March (ABC’s V also took its final bow Tuesday night after a four-week run, also set to return in March). Before viewers know it, that other popular reality competition- FOX’s American Idol- will be back in January, with new judge Ellen DeGeneres ready to tickle America’s funny bone. Will DeGeneres spar with Simon Cowell as famously as ex-judge Paula Abdul? (Viewers probably will have to wait until February or so to find out, as DeGeneres was not part of the show’s early auditions).
Back to DWTS- until March, less-than-A-list celebs, keep those wannabe dancing feet firmly on the ground, and keep dreaming about that mirrorball.
